Nan Sloane

Standing for:
Unlock Democracy Council (East constituency)

Who I am:
I have extensive experience of how politics works, having been a local councillor (where I led on issues such as equalities and education) and a staff member for the Labour Party, when I was responsible for the conduct of elections and the implementation of legal and financial regulations.

I also have experience of how the ‘real world’ works, having worked in advertising and insurance before concentrating on politics. In 2007 I set up the Centre for Women & Democracy which campaigns to increase the representation of women of all communities and backgrounds at all levels.

Why I am standing for Unlock Democracy's Council:
I was first elected to Council in 2010, and I am seeking re-election because I believe that there is still a great deal to do to if we are to create a secure participative democracy for the future. Despite the set-back of the AV referendum, we still need to campaign actively for electoral reform, but we also need to do much more than this.

We need to find new, realistic, people-centred ways of engaging individuals and communities in political life, and we need to change the ways political relationships work between structures as well as between people.

I want reform of the voting system, a written constitution, and parliamentary reform, but the real key is the active engagement of every citizen in how we govern ourselves, how we make decisions and how public policy is debated and agreed.

Unlock Democracy has an important role to play in developing our democratic future, and I believe that, drawing on my experience as councillor, political organiser and director of a third sector organisation, I have been able to contribute something to that over the last two years. I would be honoured to be given the opportunity to continue to do so.
