Ceri Smith

Standing for:
Unlock Democracy Council (London and South East constituency)

Who I am:
Currently a full time campaigner for a large healthcare charity, my career started with the Local Works project at Unlock Democracy where I helped the team in their successful campaign to see the Sustainable Communities Act Amendment Bill passed in Parliament. Since then, I have gone on to work for a number of other campaigning organisations working on democratic and social justice issues, while dedicating much of my spare time to environmental and local activism.

Why I am standing for Unlock Democracy's Council:
Unlock Democracy has always been an organisation close to my heart, and I believe passionately in creating a democracy that is fair and inclusive for all. This comes at a crucial time, when crises such as cash for access and the closeness of big business, media  corporations and politicians has left many people feeling disillusioned with the political establishment. Unlock Democracy needs to lead the way in reversing the deeply concerning disengagement and disenchantment. This can only be done by reforming our system of governance, especially on keystone issues such as House of Lords reform, party funding, PR, and fair representation of women in politics. If elected, I will dedicate my energies to ensuring that Unlock Democracy wins these crucial campaigns and I will bring the political, organisational and citizen involvement skills that I have developed in my professional life. I would work to help ensure that the organisation continues to build its member participation, with better communication between Unlock Democracy’s members, its council and the organisation’s staff so that we are a focussed and powerful force for change.
